Upgrading Phone as a Gift - Can I complete the Upgrade Transfer at Home?

I'm purchasing an upgraded phone as a Christmas gift for my wife, so I cannot bring her existing phone in for transfer without ruining the surprise. 

Do I have to complete the transfer from old to new phone in the store or can I do that at home after she's opened the gift?

There should be no problem doing that in-store. Make sure you let the associate know that it's going to be a surprise.

Any prep prior to activation? Like uploading contacts to AT&T with the old phone?

It really depends on the phones. You can make sure everything is backed up to Google or the memory card or whatever the phone supports, but there are a lot of variables. But don't worry, you won't lose anything by upgrading. You can always bring your wife into the store after Christmas so they can transfer everything for you.
