Ipod not working with USB on Pioneer Car Stereo

I recently purchased a Pioneer FH-X730BS car stereo from Best Buy and had them install it.  Everything is working well except the USB connection doesn't recognize my iPod Nano or my iPhone 6S.  The USB connection does recognize a flash drive and I can play songs from the flash drive through the USB.  But the USB doesn't recognize my iPod Nano or iPhone 6S.  I can connect up my iPhone through the bluetooth and that works but it doesn't work through the USB.  Any ideas?

I should also add that using a standard USB to lightening connector cable, the USB does charge my iPad Nano and iPhone but it doesn't recognize the iPod/iPhone to play music from the devices.  So the cable is charging the units but not playing the music.

Re: Ipod not working with USB on Pioneer Car Stereo

Shoot! I'm terribly sorry to hear that your iPod nano is not playing music with your new Pioneer double din stereo. I am glad to hear that you took the time to have our MECP certified Autotechs install your radio!

With that said, I honestly do not know why those nanos cause so many problems with aftermarket radios, but they have always been problematic all the way back to the originals when they were first released. Being a newer nano with lighting port to USB I am truly surprised that this is still an ongoing issue.

I do have some things for you to try out and hopefully this will help resolve the issues you are facing with the playing music. First please know that no radio can guarantee any comparability if it the device was "jail broken."

Perform a factory soft reset on the iPod nano, usually this will free up something that could have been blocking the connection. Once you have tried the soft reset did that resolve the issue?

If not, try playing a song on the nano. Find the song and press play to where you see it actually ticking the clock down on the current track. Once you see the song playing now try to plug it in. Did that resolve the issue? This step was the way that it had to be done on the old 30 pin connectors...

Make sure your firmware is current an up to date with the most recent IOS software from apple, lastely if that still doesn't work, please let me know and hopefully I can do an it more research and find out how to get that iPod to play!

Thank you for taking the time to post, and please know I'll do my best to find a resolution for you, if the above options do not work. Have a great night!

To reset your iPod nano (7th generation), press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the screen goes dark. After a few seconds, you'll see the Apple logo and then the Home screen.

To reset your iPod nano (6th generation), press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo. You might need to repeat this step.

Re: Ipod not working with USB on Pioneer Car Stereo

I will try these things.  But before I do, I can see the iPod working and I can plug the mini jack into the mini connector on the car and that works.

The other thing is you didnt mention my iPhone 6.  That ALSO doesn't work with the USB.  That would make me think that this is a Pioneer issue  not necessarily an Apple issue, NO?

Also do you know how to tell which generation of iPod nano I have?

Thanks,

John

Re: Ipod not working with USB on Pioneer Car Stereo

I tried the soft reboot of the iPod Nano and plugging it into the USB with the Nano playing.  Neither worked.  I also tried a soft reboot of my iPhone 6S.  That also didn't work.  So in both cases, Nano and iPhone, I can charge both with the USB connection but cannot play music from either one.  The pioneer unit does not recognize that either are plugged into the USB connection.

Thanks,

John

Re: Ipod not working with USB on Pioneer Car Stereo

Man I was really hoping those quick fixes would solve this situation. I realize that your time is important and the next step is to not waste anymore of your time.

Call the installation bay nearest you and speak with an Autotech about what to do next. I have personally never had any issues with apple products and car electronics so this is certainly strange, but the nano has always been difficult. In the meantime continue to work your music via Bluetooth until your scheduled warranty appointment.

Please bring in the yellow copies or purchase receipt when you show back up, and they should be able to test other apple products via USB to see if it is something quick, like a setting, or possibly a firmware update.

Again thank you for the follow ups and you will be in good hands with our amazing Autotechs!! Best of luck!

Re: Ipod not working with USB on Pioneer Car Stereo

You have tried multiple USB to lightning cords correct to rule out the cord being an issue? That would be my last guess. Keep me posted on your findings.

[ Edited ]

Yes, I tried 2 different USB to lightening cords.  I even ordered a Pioneer USB to Lightening Cord mentioned in the link below - CD-IU52, thinking maybe I had to use a Pioneer specific cable (grasping at straws here...).  That will be here in a couple of days.

Also note in the link above, at the bottom of the page, they mention a firmware update.  I haven't tried that yet.
