Dash cam choice

I am in the market for a dash cam for my truck.I think the night vision is needed or you might not see the plate you need in low light.Ihave a large Garmin commercial GPS so I don't need those features.I like the parking mode and the option of the rear camera which I will purchase also. Do the rear cams have night vision?? I also want to have it powered by the truck so I don't have to rely on batteries that deteriate in time.

Tried doing my own research which made my head spin.

What you   mr geek man??

Re: Dash cam choice

I am pretty biased in my opinion as i do enjoy my Thinkware 750 and the backup camera, with parking mode.  I personally have not been dissapointed since i have purchased this camera and rear facing camera.  the parking mode is great to give me piece of mind to see who is around my vehicle while i am away, and also the many other features that this camera offers while driving.  check out my sticky about this camera, the write up on it should be pretty basic, but if you have any further questions do not hesitate to let me know.  Best of luck!

Re: Dash cam choice

What aboing at  night vision.I do a fair share of driving at night and low light. Is it triggered by a motion detector in the park mode?

Re: Dash cam choice

Yes for parking, it activates with motion around the cameras, personally mine is well before the people would even know whats in the car before being recorded.

Night time driving Thinkware has very good low light recording. The f770 is the model that is replacing the 750 and comes with "super night vision" which is a better enhancement for low light times. 770 is also slimmer in design.

With all new technology the cameras will continue to get better and better, but the 750 stands out, and when the 770 comes out to best buy i will re write a new adticle.

Re: Dash cam choice

Thoughts....

  • check YouTube for video samples on what dashcam you have shortlisted.  Seek out the night time pictures
  • some dashcams have IR lights. I wonder how useful they are with the windshield glass reflecting on them
  • some cameras have an option for an external battery so it can continue to record for several hours without draining the car battery
  • suction cup vs adhesive.  I like the suction cup on my Garmin dashcam 20 where I can remove the dashcam when parked in shady neighborhoods.  However suction cup have a tendency to come lose.
  • if you have a garage door opener kept in the car..... dashcam can reveal where your home is to a criminal to use that garage opener for a break-in
