2nd Viper Remote problem and 2012 civic

Hi there. I had my first Viper Remote installed in my 2012 civic by best buy. The first one worked fine for a month or so, then started turning off and starting non-stop and eventually wouldn't start up. I had it uninstalled by best buy. They recommended sending it back to Viper for a new one in case something was wrong with it. I did that and got a new one back.

It got misplaced when I moved and I decided to buy a new one to have it installed for free by best buy. It was installed and worked for a few days then started doing what the old one did. I spoke to Honda and they told me they would only take a look at my car once the device was removed. I am having it removed by best buy and Friday. When I spoke to someone at the store, he said that if they sent it back to Viper I would be charged $150 for the labor when I had it installed. Please tell me there's another option, such as the store holding onto the device until I have my car looked at and find a solution. This will be the second time I have had a device installed by best buy removed. I explained what had happened previously to the tech the second time I had a starter installed and he believed that he was installing it so it wouldn't happen again. Please help! Thank you!

Re: 2nd Viper Remote problem and 2012 civic

All of our remote starts will come with Geek Squad Installation packaged out with it, when you buy new.  When you remove that unit completely and have a whole new system installed, installation cost will begin again for the new installation.  I'm not sure how they got the $150 price, but that is the old price for the remote start w/keyless entry.  The new installation charges for remote start or security w/locks is $189.99.  If the techs are offering you the re-installation at $150 I would say that they are probably helping you out since they remember you and the situation that you are in.

With that said, I honestly wouldn't know what would be causing the vehicle to continue to act up only weeks after the installation of a "new" unit from Viper.  That is a pretty strait forward car with pretty much every function is controlled via Data commands *(no connection).  Before the removal of the remote start, have you had one of our Autotechs diagnose this before recommending it to be removed?

If you are experiencing start and stop issues with the vehicle itself when you are just using the key to start it, or experiencing anything after you shift out of gear, it would be a good option to get the vehicle looked at.  If you are experiencing these symptoms during remote start before you enter the vehicle and shift into gear, then that should be troubleshooted to figure out the problem.  We carry 2 brands so if for some reason Viper is causing some issues (honestly never heard of this besides once every 2-3 years) I would recommend switching to Compustar.

Compustar has all the same options and will work almost identical to the Viper unit, but without a proper diagnosis as to why the vehicle is acting up, I don't think brands will matter much since they are using the same outputs.  If they are continuing to blow fuses at the main ignition harness of the Viper, there is a document that we have for these vehilces with higher current going through their Civic ignition harnesses.  If any of these fuses are to go, then you will have a no start symptom.  Let me know with a little more detail what the symptoms are and when you are experiencing them and I may be of further assistance.

Sorry for the troubles that you are dealing with trying to get this unit installed.  The Autotech is correct that 90% of the remote starts functionality and longevity of life is the installation.  That is why I am shocked to hear that you are experiencing the same symptoms with this "new" viper unit that was purchased from us.  Either way, thank you for the time that you took to join and write with the Car, Marine, and GPS section!

Re: 2nd Viper Remote problem and 2012 civic

Thank you for the prompt reply! Yes I'll have them take a look at my car. Perhaps they can fix whatever is wrong and it won't need to be removed.

The $150 charge he gave me was if he removed it and sent it back to Viper, with no reinstallation. He said I would be reimbursed for the remote starter but $150 would be subtracted to charge me for when it was installed. :/.

As for what was happening, the car would start up and run for a few minutes, then shut off, start back up and run for approx 10-15 seconds and then start over again. After this happened twice I immediately stopped using it because I didn't want it to kill my battery like the last time. Unfortunately there are very few appointments available within the next two months in the Hudson Valley and I need to take off half a day of work and drive over an hour up to Albany to get this taken care of.

So I guess I'm asking if they can't fix it can I just get it removed and reimbursed without being charged for labor? At this point I may as well just continue starting my car manually and save myself the hassle.

Re: 2nd Viper Remote problem and 2012 civic

No, thank you for the quick updates, they definitely help me establish a bit more of a basis to be of more assistance.  In this instance since it is just the remote start that is acting up, I would highly recommend just visiting this other store to have it troubleshooted to find the culprit.  It sounds to me like it has something to do with the remote start, and as such our techs are trained to diagnose, and if time allots, fix the issue.

Depending on the module also there has been some updated firmware that not only does even more functions via Data, but also gives the customer the ability to use their OEM keyless entry that is built into the key.  That new feature is pretty stellar since the buttons used to be obsolete when remote started.  All I can ask for is your continued patience until the store is able to take a closer look into this for you.  Since you probably scheduled this in their books as a "removal" you may want to call that store where you sheduled the appointment and see if they have sooner time slots for a warranty check.

If that is the same time frame as your appointment, please understand that this is still the busy time of year for our Instalaltion Bays.  Do not hesitate to let me know if I can be of further assistance, but ultimately the Geek Squad Autotech at your local installation bay or different Best Buy will be of much better assistance when you take your car in.  Best of luck!
