1970 NOVA Car Audio Install

I purchased the complete system from Best Buy in Myrtle Beach  2 months ago. I consulted with the salesman that run their Audio Shop on what I needed.  I paid a guy from a local Audio Shop to come to my shop to install the System.

Pioneer deck, JBL 6-1/2 in the front and JBL 6X9 in the back window. Inside the car the system sounds great. We then installed the Kicker 2400W CXA1200.1 ampliphier and the 10" R-Type Alpine subs in custom boxes.

I am being told the the salesman oversold me for what I was after.

The problem I am having is that when I turn the system up the subs will cut out. approx 3-4 sec later they will come back on but they will continue to cut out untill I lower the Volume. I can get it to about half way on the volume before it cuts out. I have it set at Zero on the stereo and it will go to 10.

I took it back to the guy that installed it and he told me that the subs were dual voice coil 2 Ohm, what ever that is and he didnt think it was compatible with the Amp.

I paid alott for the system. I just want it to play right. Any help out there would br greatly appreciated.

Re: 1970 NOVA Car Audio Install

DCross,

Oh the novas I had quite the clientel at my first shop with classic cars and one customer in particular that owned 3 Novas and always brought them to me.  I personally really enjoy working on those vehicles, but I won't have the answer to your question 100%.

When an amplifier is installed there are alot of things that can cause it to go into protect mode (the cutting in and out and back on a few moments later when it cools down or the audio has lowered).  Hopefully I can help you identify some things that could be causing this, but again I don't troubleshoot things that I cannot physically see because they are just shots in the dark to be honest.  Here is a list of things that I most commonly see with these symptoms.

Wrong guage wiring

Bad Ground

Bad connection at the battery

Ohm load dropped below 2 ohms (most amps cannot handle 1 or .5 ohms of resistance)

Settings turned up to high on the amp

Settings turned up to high on the radio

Either setting on one or the other tuned incorrectly

Weak remote turn on wire

Subwoofers voicecoil going out

Bridging amplifiers for more power

Improper installation

And the list goes on and on, but rest assure that our MECP certified Autotechs can usually isolate, and fix the issue, but at a cost.  The troubleshooting fees for an Autotech are $24.99 per 1/4 hour and that equates to $99.99 per 1 hour.  During that time if we are able to fix the issue and you want us to continue the work after we inform you of the problem, these 1/4 skus will be charged until the situation is fixed.  We do like to save our customers money, but sometimes when other installers claim to know what they are doing, sometimes that will make those charges increase because we have to undo alot of work before we can properly diagnose it.  The Autotechs at any installation bay can usually take a quick look and know where to start, and possibly a more close to accurate quote before you sign off on the installation.

I will say that your setup is probably not the problem and it is going to boil down to the installation and wiring, so please do not toss that amp or sub before it is accurately diagnosed.

I would recommend heading into you local Best Buy to speak with the Geek Squad Autotech for this situation.  Thank you for the time that you took to join and write with the community, and I do wish I could have been more help to you, but when it comes to troubleshooting I want to make sure that I am not just throwing darts, and accurately assessing the situation at hand.

I am a CAR Geek Squad Autotech, but the views that I post are my own and not that of Best Buy.
