Both of these cameras should work great for your described shooting situations, but if you can afford the added expense of the Nikon D90 I would go with that camera. The Nikon D90 is the more advanced of the two, and I don't necessarily mean the more complicated. The Nikon D90 takes higher resolution images, and has the added bonus of being able to capture true HD video until the memory card is full. This was the first DSLR to be able to capture HD video, and being able to have interchangeable lens capability on an HD camcorder is a feature usually reserved for professional level camcorders that cost much much more than this camera. Yes, what Allan says... but add that the D90 has much better low light (HIGH ISO) capability!
Between those two: D90 hands down.
