canon vixia hf r20

I installed the pdf manual for it from the one disc that came with the camera. Do I need to install the Transfer Utility disc to be able to get the video from the camera to my computer or can I just connect the usb cord that came with and do this?

Re: canon vixia hf r20 => getting videos to computer

Doing a quick Google on this camera.  It has 8gb built-in and has SD card slots for additional storage.

Personally I use the external cards first, and using the built-in memory when my SD cards are full.  Transferring to the computer is much easier as you take remove the SD card from the reader and then bring the files across with Windows File Manager.  The big benefit is not relying on the camcorder battery to be fully charged during the long transfer and risking corrupted files.

Reviewing the manual.... page 119 gives you instructions on how to get the video from the built-in memory.

Here's a question.... what software do you plan to use to edit your videos?  I like Pinnacle.

I used the internal memory to do a little bit of recording before I got a card for it. But do plan to record on card. I have not decided on editing software yet, still researching which would be best for me.

Going back to your original question....

What happens when you plug the USB cable?  Can you see the videos with Windows File Explorer?  Can you copy the files to your hard drive?

Either nothing happens and you need to transfer the files yourself. This is how I prefer it.

Or it launches an application you installed and the transfer is done automatically.

Try it and explore your camera.  Again do it with a fully charged battery to ensure the transfer is not interrupted and you get corruption.

Re: canon vixia hf r20 => getting videos to computer

When I took the usb cord out of the little packet, it had a paper that said do not connect until installing enclosed software. So, I guess that answers my question on that one. You said you like Pinnacle for editing, what makes it better/preferable over Elements Premiere?

Re: canon vixia hf r20 => getting videos to computer

OK.... then follow what the instructions say....  It's best.  Personally, I'm just don't like too much stuff installed on my computer. That's why I like saving it to the SD card and using the reader.  I know a little more about this stuff, so I know how to undo and fix things myself.  Giving advice over the internet like this is now easy, nor aways accurate as I'm not looking over your shoulder.

I have both Premiere Elements and Pinnacle Studio.  Neither are the latest versions.

  • I have found Premiere Elements easier to use.
  • However for performance and keyboard interface speed, I am three times more productive on Pinnacle Studio.
  • Elements doesn't max out my quad-core.... Pinnacle takes full advantage of my quad-core CPU's and maxes them out for rendering speed
  • Both offer image stabilization, Pinnacle renders much quicker

Re: canon vixia hf r20 => getting videos to computer

don't like alot of stuff loaded on mine either. Is there a way to transfer the recording on the camera, from the internal memory to a card? I installed the transfer utility and then tried to take the recordings from the camera to the computer and it didn't transfer. It said it did, but when I looked, it gave me nothing. I am not sure what I did wrong. I appreciate the help, even if you are not looking over my shoulder and can't see what it is that I need to be doing.
