Hi,
I have an HV30 and it can capture sports pretty well. It performs well in low light also.
I have low light sample here http://vimeo.com/2412470

It uses HDV tape but mind you HDV even the pro cameras still use HDV because of data throughput is much higher. The HV30 also has a bigger sensor than the HF10 so the picture quality is better. In term's of portability it's light also even if it has extra parts to handle tape. Picture quality is way better than HF10.
Here is a comparison for specs http://tinyurl.com/4klov4
Both are good as point and shoot. HDV has advantages that when after you get your footage you can use the tape as archive. For AVCHD you still have to store it to another location and it take a long time to process the footage because of the decoding. My deciding factor was picture quality. If you need a camcorder now get the HV30. If can wait a while longer get the next model of Solid State Camcorder.
Hope that helps.
