Re: Which camera is better?

Going to be ALOT more accessories available for Nikon than Sony. Never used a D5100 or A55 before in the field other than playing around with store display cameras so cant really say if ones better than the other. Best thing is to handle both of them. Some times it just clicks as to which "feels" better to you. But remember if you decide to get really into photography, you generally will stick with one brand afterwards since replacing lenses can be very $$$$ when you switch brands.

I've never had any issues with Sony DSLRs aside from the lack of accessories and such for them. I'm a Nikon fanboy so I'm partial to the D5100. You're able to get a lot of different glass for your camera from many different MFGs.

Re: Which camera is better?

Unless there is something about the A55 that REALLY stands out as something you want, I'd say go with Nikon, for the same reason others stated - more robust third-party support.

Sony is probably the worst out there in terms of third-party compatibility - they use a completely nonstandard hotshoe for flashes (while nearly everyone else's flash pinouts differ, they are all at least compatible with basic "dumb" flashes that just trigger on the center pin - Sony is the ONLY manufacturer not compatible with this scheme), and have a tendency to use nonstandard flash memory (Memory Stick).

Re: Which camera is better?

Go Nikon....

Biggest examples of accessory issues are third party flashes, triggers and L brackets.  Manufacturers will make them for Nikon long before they will be available for Sony.  When they do, the Sony accessories may be more expensive as they Sony DSLR are low volume.

As a beginner you may not care about these additions.  But if you get more advanced, you'll want to know about them.
