I am looking to buy a camera that is not mega-expensive to take pictures of my kids in their sports.  My son plays baseball and football.  My daughter plays softball.  I want to be able to take good pictures.  What would you recommend as a good camera for this type of pictures?

To clarify...

• what is your budget?  There's lots of choices under $5000.
• does it have to be waterproof and work in near freezing temperatures?
• does it need to work in near darkness for late night games?
• does it have to be portable?
• are you in the grandstand?  Or are you up against the field of play?

It does not have to be waterproof or work in freezing temps.  Yes to near darkness because a lot of the games are about 8ish.  I would like  for it to be easily carried.  Most of the time I'm in the stands for football games, close to the field.  Baseball/Softball I'm on the field.  About a 1000 or less.  I'm not a professional.  Something that is easy to use.

When it comes to camera, i really do admire Samsung, Sony, Nikon. Sony sounds to be durable and expensive just like the others. As a matter of fact, you may chose from any of the above. i guess they all have better picture qualities.

A DSLR with an f/2.8 lens is my first choice.  D700 is my preferred body.  However, that would triple your budget.

Sensor size is my priority and for under I would say to look at the upcoming G1X is best for lowlight, especially with a higher ISO.  However at 4x optical magnification, you will be craving for more.  Then again, you can always crop in on your images from the 14mp images.

What models do others think?

Considering it's not for professional use, I'd recommend something simple.  Either a Canon T2I or Nikon D5100 with a decent telephoto lens.  Definitely recommend a DSLR or Compact Body (Sony Nex series).  Your lenses are going to make a huge difference as well.  As a "test run", try out a standard 50/75-300mm lens to see how the size and weight as well as distance feel for you.  The best thing about the DSLR for you is the upgradability of them. 

The biggest thing...don't go straight for the bottom just for cost.  While the lenses are important, so are the capabilities of the body.  A Nikon D3100 or Canon T3 (not the T3I) will more than likely leave you in the dark a bit too much for those night games.
