This would be my 1st camcorder, so am very much confused which one to purchase.

I'm looking for purchasing a new camcorder. This would be my 1st camcorder, so am very much confused which one to purchase. Well, my budget is between 18000-23000. My main objective of the camcorder is to capture all those first moments of our 1st child. Apart from this, i love traveling to new places and wildlife. I want something which could satisfy my needs and also reasonably well storage capacity camcorder. It would be very kind of you if you could suggest me something soon cos the baby could be out anytime from now.

um...  What units are those???

$18000-23000 is close to enough to buy a RED ONE, but I'm guessing that's NOT what your budget really is.  $180.00-$230.00?

I would reccommend something with removable SDHC flash memory.

The Canon FS series are quite well regarded, the main problem with them is that they only have electronic image stabilization, not optical.  However, they are one of the only standard definition camcorders I can find with a microphone input - for decent audio you really need an external microphone.

The Canon HF200 retails for $750 but appears to have a $200 rebate available.  It has optical image stabilization and a mic jack - I have its predecessor the HF100 and absolutely love it.

HDD camcorders have moving parts, so are less rugged and the moving parts produce noise that is likely to wind up in your video.

If I recall correctly, a 16GB SDHC card gives about 2 hours of recording with the HF100.  The HF200 supports a slightly higher bitrate, so slightly less recording there.
