Oregon Sales Tax on digital items?

I was going to order the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Expansion for Nitnendo Switch (SKU: 1000007758) but on the checkout page it was showing a sales tax amount of $1.45 even though I live in Oregon where there is no sales tax. Anyone know whats going on?

Re: Oregon Sales Tax on digital items?

Hello EW14BB,

Welcome to the Best Buy Community forums. I’m loving Breath of the Wild, and I’m excited to pick up the Expansion Pass. Thanks for your excellent question.

Based on what I can tell, I believe what you are seeing now is the “estimated sales tax” rather than the actual tax you will be charged. When I add the Expansion Pass to my cart when I’m not logged in to my bestbuy.com account, I see the tax as $1.45 just like you. When I sign in to my personal account, however, the tax drops to my local rate.

Make sure you are signed in to your bestbuy.com account rather than trying to check out as a guest. Before you co to the checkout screen, make sure you click on the big “sign in” in the top right corner of the web page. If you don’t have an account, sign up for one first, then add the item to your cart, and then check out and you should be charged (or not charged, in your case) your local tax rate.

If you do this, once you get to the actual payment page your purchase should show up as tax free. If you have any questions, or if this doesn’t work, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Re: Oregon Sales Tax on digital items?

Hi KyleR,

I signed into my account before adding the item to my cart. I see the tax on the payment information page and even if I enter my billing information (an Oregon address) the tax still shows. It seems like if I click the place order button I will be charged the tax.

Hello EW14BB,

Thanks for the fast response.

My next suggestion for you would be to log in to your account and update your shipping and billing addresses. It is possible that reentering those will allow you to make the purchase without tax.

If that doesn't work, it is possible that there is some sort of web site issue causing this. Are you able to check to see if the tax appears on any other items added to your cart? If you could possibly check with another digital item, and a physical item, that would be helpful. I’d just like to see if it is just with this one item, or if it is happening across multiple items.

In the meantime, if we do determine this is a web site error, it could take some time to get it resolved. In th emeantime, if you'd like to try to place the order in the meantime, you can give us a call at 1-888-BESTBUY  to place the order.

Thank you,
