It’s Quite Simple – “Bloom Where You’re Planted”

When I left home at 17 to go to college 2,500 miles away, I didn’t have a real clue as to what I wanted to become in life. What career path I envisioned for myself. Who I wanted to be.  But one thing I knew for sure was that I only wanted to go to this college – I knew where I wanted to be for this important life transition.

That first year as a freshman was eye opening. Living 2,500 miles from my parents. Completely self-sufficient. Paying my bills, working my way through college, learning who I was. The doors of employment opportunity opened and closed as I worked my way through the maze of possibilities. Two years came and went rather quickly.

During spring break of my sophomore year, I was strongly considering taking a break. When I say a break, I mean not returning to finish out the last two years for my BA degree. I returned home for this short break and knew I had to broach the subject somehow. But of course, when I posed the idea of a break to my mom, I didn’t quite paint it with such permanence. She seemed to look right through me as she gave my words some thought. And then she spoke. Without judgment. Without anger. She simple said, “It’s entirely up to you. But you know, most people who take a break never go back to finish.” As a result, mom propelled me into much deeper thought. I didn’t see that coming.

Well, I didn’t quit, or take a “break”. I decided to bloom where I was planted instead. This opportunity wasn’t going to come around again easily. So I took root. I went on to finish out my 4 years, earning my degree and an amazing amount of perseverance, life experience, and lasting insight, personal and professional development skills, and some of the best friends.

If I had chosen a different path, by default, I wouldn’t be where or who I am today. I thank my lucky stars mom challenged me in her gentle way.

We are in challenging times. Should you stay in your current job? Maybe. Maybe not. Consider what you really want. Be honest with yourself and look at the big picture. Don’t act in haste in a moment of despair for a short term fix. As they say, don’t miss the forest for the trees. Bloom!
