Re: Waiting for refund

Hello Hgimmy1,

There's nothing more frustrating in my world than having to wait for a refund to post to my account statement, so I certainly understand your sentiment over your recent return experience. I regret any inconvenience to you.

Generally speaking, a refund to a debit card will not be reflected on your statement for about 5-7 business days. This is due to the policies of most banks, not Best Buy withholding your funds. In some cases, financial institutions may be able to accelerate this process, so if you need your funds sooner than the time frame I mentioned, I suggest contacting your bank.

Please know I'm grateful you took the time to write to us with your concerns.

Sincerely,

John|Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate

Re: Waiting for refund

The service reps answer is only partially accurate. Half of the time waiting for a refund is on the banks end, and half of it, is in fact, best buy holding the funds. I use a credit union, and all debit and credit transactions are processed immediately. Meaning, all money going into, and out of, is authorized at the time the transaction reaches them, regardless of day of the week or time of day. Many companies, best buy included, don't process refunds right away, such as waiting until the start of a new accounting week. Best buy is one of those companies. Walmart, for example, processes at the start of the following business day, a refund done there will not be sent to the financial institution until the start of the next business day, Saturday will not show until Monday, etc. Best buy has a tendency to wait 48 hours. They do however, have the option to refund cash for debit purchases, although in my experience, the customer service reps are told to give excuses as to why they 'can't', like the drawer won't open, or something similar. The reason for this being, the longer the funds are in best buys accounts, the more interest they are able to make off it. 10000 people in a day, waiting on a $5 refund is $50000 they can get a few cents interest from. It's dishonest, but it's good business practice.
Next time you choose to buy from this business, make it clear you want a cash refund for your debit purchase, and be ready for an argument, because these people want their jobs as much as you want your money back, and this is what they have to do to get their paychecks. Or use cash and make it easier on everyone, ATM machines are everywhere.
You'll notice on your refund receipt, under refund, visa, the word 'manual' is printed, indicating is a manual selection to refund to the card, rather then cash.

Re: Waiting for refund

@Zayle Best Buy no longer has the option to refund cash for debit purchases. The Point of Sale update that they rolled out about a year ago removed that option. The stores have no physical way to change the tender of the return - debit returns on to the card, not cash.

Re: Waiting for refund

Hgimmy1:  Try  counting  to 10, take several deep breaths, and rethink your positions.

1)  you did not ASK FOR  the receipt for the purchase

2) apparently you will receive the credit in 2-3 days, which isn't so long to wait after all, is it?

3)  contacting FTC regarding fraud won't get you a refund, as Best Buy didn't require you to use a Debit Card, which as "Zayle" explained invokes specific practices that are frustrating and beyond our control.

Finally, Best Buy is a reputable corporation that would not have fraudulent practices.  I have always been happy with my Best Buy experiences; yes, sometimes the staff is occupied.   I wonder, you don't explain why return the TV?
