Consumers Beware!!! Best Buy and the Geek Squard Warranty is not worth the paper it's writte on.

So I purchased a Vizo 60" TV from BB and paid an additional $150.00  for a total of $890.00.   The TV's screen went bad in just over a years time so I called Geek Squad to come out and fix it.   They told me that the TV could not be fixed and that I would be issued a store credit for the TV.   I received a store credit for $650.00 but could not find a TV with the same specs as the one I had purchased and asked BB for a return of my money.   Low and behold, BB and Geek Squad informed me that they could not return to me the $650.00 in cash or issue it back to the credit card but would only give me the store credit.    So basically when you buy a Geek Squad warranty (for additional money over and above the cost of the item you buy at BB) you are really wasting your money.   You are tethered to BB, they have your money and the only way you can recover is to make a purchase at a BB store.   I have called customer service and the Geek Squad only to be told......SORRY THAT'S OUR POLICY.   Be forewarned, stay away from Extended Warranties from BB and the Geek Squad....head over to Amazon, they know how to actually handle customer service and help.   No more Best Buy for me!

Good Afternoon JimSharp,

Welcome to the Best Buy Support Online Forum Community! I appreciate the time you’ve taken to join our community to share your feedback.

Geek Squad Protection Plans are great for when the unexpected occurs. I’m sorry that fixing your TV wasn’t an option, and you were provided a gift card for the price you originally paid.

Geek Squad is not unable to assist you outside of the terms you agreed to at the time of purchasing your Geek Squad Protection Plan. Due to advances in technology providing you a gift card for the current value to not exceed the orginal purchase price may have been the best option available. Best Buy gift cards do not expire, and it’s a better option than being out $650 if you didn’t have the plan initially.

On your behalf I’ve documented your displeasure with your plan here at our corporate offices. Thank you again for your feedback.

Respectfully,

No Mariah I was not given a credit for what I paid....I paid $673.00 for the TV and the additional $150.00 for the lousy Geek Squad extended warranty for a total of $823.00. So I lost $173.00 and am still stuck with only being able to use the credit at Best Buy! I paid you with (Real Money) and now I'm stuck with your Best Buy Monopoly Money! Shame on you!

Best Buy's in-store credit practice is a scam, don't be fooled by this Chain of less than stellar stores!   (Nefarious retailing at it's finest) Too big to fail, maybe not.... Remember Circuit City?

I guess I'm confused about how any of this is bad. You basically paid for insurance on your tv. It went bad after a year. The manufacturer ls warranty is over. They are providing the original price of the TV back to you so you can replace it. Of course it will be on store credit, you bought best buy insurance, not sears insurance in which case you would get sears in store credit.

No....Best Buy did not issue me a credit back to the credit card I used for this transaction, they issued me a store credit for $650.00, I paid $673.00!   How can you be confused?   I paid Best Buy for a TV with a credit card that can be used anywhere in the world and was given a store credit that can only be used at a Best Buy Store.   I am voicing my dissatisfaction with BB's Geek Squad Policy and their lousy customer service. With online retail gaining momentum by the minute and brick and mortar stores eroding daily, you'd think that BB and their Geek Squad would try and do everything possible to make things right with their customers.    I'm retired and live on SS, this may not be a big deal for you but it is for me!

Fool me once Best Buy, shame on you....fool me twice, shame on me.

Re: Consumers Beware!!! Best Buy and the Geek Squard Warranty is not worth the paper it's writte on

The Geek Squad Protection supplies an exchange of "Comparable Technology", not a dollar for dollar exchange as per the plan terms and conditions.  What was the unit that was used as the comparable sku?  This determined your store credit value and with that the intention of purchasing that tv as a replacement without spending out of your own pocket.  Of course, if you wanted to upgrade you would be responsible for covering the difference.

The plan also does not provide you with money back, so the intention of the store credit is to apply to the comparable tv that they determined above.  Without the plan since the manufacturer warranty expired, you would be purchasing a new tv 100% out of pocket or paying the parts and labor to repair, which at the current market rates would be approx. 80% of the cost of a new 60" tv.  This is what the plan is there to protect against.

I am a Best Buy Employee, but the views that I post are my own and not that of Best Buy.

jdogg836 is correct, the alternative would be getting no money back and having to buy a new TV with no assistance from Best Buy (if you didn't have the plan).
