Wish LIst Registry for Churches

Status: Tell Us More
by OkieOrangeblood on ‎06-17-2014 05:21 PM

I volnteer at a local church.  Like many non-profits we struggle with funding, and priorities.

Then out of the biblical precept, 'you have not because you ask not', this idea emerged:  Asking large corporations, such as Best Buy, to use already existing systems (from wedding registry software) to create a wish list registry for houses of faith!

Churches could come in with their official documents (such as tax exempt letters) and register with their local store, then create their wish list.  They could then distribute that information to their congregation and to others who may be interested.  Members (parishiners) could in turn and either annonymously or if they wish to have their "donation" recorded with the church for tax statements, could make purcheses to either take themselves or have held for pick up by the church.

This could help churches nationwide and move inventory for you.  What do you think?

I really like this idea. I am not sure how BestBuy stands as a corporation on religous matters though and that may be the thing that gets in the way of an excellent idea.

Hmm.... this could get interesting and should be tested in some key locations before going nationwide.

Would one church or a faith be offended by another's support by Best Buy?  I know some companies have had to decline charity requests to setup temporary funding drives to not take sides.

I see Best Buy already operates charities for children...

Best buy already recognizes tax exempt organizations (after you bring in your state issued letter if exemption) and they issued a card to expedite purchases ... That is already set up. Best buy doesn't make a judgement call, rather acknowledge the status already confirmed by the state's department of taxation. Also Best Buy wouldn't be "supporting" religious organizations (and this could be expanded to all tax exempt organizations) and any and all (with documentation from their states department of taxation) could register. As opposed to supporting these organizations, Best Buy would be profiting from the mercantile activity they've facilitated via the registry. It's really a win-win-win for all. Win for the organizations, win for their members, win for Best Buy.

This is NOT a request for funding in any way, rather it’s simply asking Best Buy to facilitate targeted mercantile activity via the registry.

I think an issue with doing it the way you suggest it would then allow people to come in and buy items, in the name of your church, get them tax free, and then there is no way of knowing if that item ever gets to the church or just goes home.

Such a thing would not be legal.

I would suggest asking your people for Gift Cards to Best Buy as a way to make an electronic donation.  Then someone from the church could come in with the tax exemption paperwork and make the necessary purchases.

They could have the choice - take it with them and pay tax - or leave it for pickup/delivery tax free. Gift cards provide no incentive. They'll give cash for that matter if they themselves aren't "invested" in the purchase. That's why wedding registries are so efficient - the recepient receives what they want/need and the purchaser had a choice in the purchase.
