Best Buy should act as a clearinghouse to connect B customers who want to trade-in their used equipment for new B merchandise with those in the market for used equipment and devices. Example - The id of a B customer wanting to buy a used iPad could put their official id on a waiting list for specific used equipment. This customer would be notified by email of a trade-in item being available and at which store the new item was purchased by another customer. Each B store would offer the customer of the new item actually purchased the service of posting his used equipment on the trade-in site viewable by just B Reward Zone members. The person trading in the used equipment would set the price and B would manage the communications required to connect the buyer and seller of used equipment. B would in no way be responsible for the condition or availability of the used item. The function of B is only to facilitate the sale of the used item by connecting the buyer and seller. The monetary benefit to B would be to collect a 5% of the sale price commission from the seller of the used item up front. Each item would be posted on the trade-in site for a period of 30 days maximum. The item would be removed from the site when sold, by the seller.
If half the proceeds from the commission were given to local charities, like food banks, to feed the poor, some creative accounting methods could be employed for a tax benefit to B. Other benefits to B in doing this would increase the likelihood that a RZ customer of a used item might change their mind and purchase a similar or same new item from B after further consideration.
