Higher Trade In Values for Newer Games

Status: Tell Us More

As a couple of games that have been released within that past couple months, such as Saints Row the Third, Assassin's Creed Revelations and Uncharted 3 to just name a couple, their trade in values are significantly low.  Best Buy then puts the games back on the shelf at a price of $44.99.  The trade-in value of the games are about $14-$18 for newly released games.  I believe that Best Buy should increase their trade-in program values significantly and include more bonus trade-ins, featuring 40%-50% more value on your trades more often.  As I know for a couple people that I know, you trade in 3 games and get the price of one brand new game on your gift card.  This would be excellent if best buy would do this.

I'm fairly certain that anyone trading in a game would agree with you completely. I am also certain that the price set on trade-in value is determined by business needs. I would be interested in hearing from employees on this.

They wisened up they originally starte new games at $30 TiV making them $45-$48 with unlocked. No profit margin at all. They dropped it to $25 for a few weeks after released for AAA titles making them $37.50 ($40 with GCU). Which leaves a slight margin for a $1 or 2. I think $20 should be tops on brand new released games for BBY. I say that it should be tops from their business perspective. They are at an advantage over GS as they have to wait 30 days for those titles to be available to sell per a majority of pawn laws. As such they have to predict what the price is going to be along with the game being at least 30 days old. Those that wanted the game will have already purchased it within 30 days or the ones that haven't are waiting on a really good sale on it. $48 to buy a used game isn't really a deal either as majority of games lately have been at least $49.99 in the first month. Even the great MW3 got a $10 cut in the first month which activision hates.

Allan, what would employees chiming in help? Not trying to be condescending, just that I am not sure what they would bring to the table. I would think that the prices would be derived from not only supply and demand, but future projections of how games will sell (given the 30 day pawn laws). I figured this would be a scientific numbers crunch issue. Also you have to factor in this day and age of online passes. Not Feasible to sell a used EA game for $48, when they have to purchase an online pass for $10 more. Making that used game $2 cheaper than a new game. To Allan, I would highly suggest doing what GS did and enter into a contract with EA and Sony that any EA or Sony used game they sell, the customer gets a printed online pass with the sale. I assume GSs contract gives a portion of the proceeds from the game to the publisher, but on the opposite side GS gets a highly reduced rate on the EA passes which they can pass on to their customers.

@Jimmienomam,

I hear what you are saying, and from what I understand our trade-in values are already higher than some of our competitors. I do see value in your idea in regards to giving a customer an online pass with the purchase of a used game, and this is exactly why I asked for more comments.
