If they came to my house to change my oil and not have to bring it to them, i guarantee that price would go up, for the cost of insurance, travel time, and gas.

1. You're about 2 years late to the game. It's an old article. I'm glad you're catching up on your reading. You need to join the other bandwagoners and start posting about ex-CEO Brian Dunn resigning.

2. America is built upon a capitalist mix economy, which partly means that sellers can charge what they want, and buyers, get this, can CHOOSE to buy what they want. Shocking huh? Seriously, I was driving down the street the other day looking for gas, and a Shell was charging $4.59 for premium gas. You know what I did? I drove right past them and pulled into a Chevron (only $4.39 for premium) like a boss. Awesome huh? I chose not to buy from Shell because I thought they were "overcharging."

3. What is the point of you posting this now? Do you expect Best Buy/Geek Squad to change their prices because you posted a 2-year old article from an enthusiast website? Would I have the Geek Squad set up my PS3 for $150? Probably not. Are there people out there who might benefit from this service? If you have worked anywhere where you deal with the general public and technology, you would wholeheartedly say yes.

You're correct. These types of "services" do largely target and prey on elderly customers...

...and charging elderly customers an exhorbitant amount of money to simply plug a device into the back of their tv could conceivably be considered a form of elder abuse and financial exploitation.

NEWSFLASH:

Sending a Geek Squad Agent out to someone's house, regardless of what the service is COSTS MONEY.  The Agent's pay, the Geekmobile(VW Bug)- Insurance, gas, other costs of the car, and the Opportunity Cost that while that Agent is at that person's house, another person who may need a more expensive service, aka computer repair, has to wait longer.

These services don't "prey on the elderly", they are simply an option.  There is a cost associated with sending people out to your home.  But apparantly according to you, since some services are fairly easy to complete, Geek Squad shouldn't offer them because due to the cost of sending a person out, that easy service would cost more than you like and you'd considere that "preying on the elderly" or "a form of elder abuse and financial exploitation".  Instead, you'd prefer that they not even offer that service and let these people who may not know how to hook these products up fend for themselves.

What an utterly stupid comment.  I can't fathom how you can't get your head around the simple concept that it costs money to send a tech out to a person's house, REGARDLESS of what service that person needs.

I'm going to have to agree....

To keep product costs low.  Additional home visit service, that many don't need..... should cost extra.  If you don't want to pay $130, you should have asked for someone else, instead of an overqualified technician.

If plugging in a PS3 was simple and doesn't need skills, perhaps your grandma should have done it herself.
