XBOX 360 won't save games

Hopefully I'm in the right place here.

I just purchased a refurbished xbox 360.  It works great except that it won't save games.  It was supposed to come with enough internal memory to do this, but it's acting as though there isn't any at all.  Is there something I'm doing wrong, or do I need to return it?

Thanks for any help.

Re: XBOX 360 won't save games

Thanks Dorothy.  I look forward to his reply.

Just wondering if anyone else here has any ideas/thoughts.  I know that the arcade version does not come with a hard drive, but the product description and manual it came with clearly states that it has enough internal memory to save some games.  Has anyone ever had this console?

Re: XBOX 360 won't save games

indymom-

It depends on the game you're trying to save, and what else, if anything, you've installed onto the system already. Some game patches are big enough to take up ALL of the internal memory of an XBox 360 Arcade model, and committing a CD to the internal memory will likely take up most of its available space, as well.

Which game are you playing and trying to save from?

You can check to see what is on the internal memory by going into the XBox console screen, selecting "Memory Options", and then selecting the internal memory. It should show what is saved on the memory, from Videos to Games to Profiles and Demos.

Another option, of course, is to get an external memory card or the Hard Drive add-on, but you're correct that you SHOULD have enough built-in memory to save games right out of the box.

Re: XBOX 360 won't save games

Thank you for your reply.

When I click on the memory option, I get a message that says "no storage device found".  I know that I can just buy a memory card, hard drive, etc., but the reason I purchased this from BB rather than a competitor is that they clearly stated that there was internal memory available.  I bought this for my daughters who only play occasionally, so we don't need a ton of memory or space.

Thank you for acknowledging that it should have enough built-in memory to save some games.  Now I know I wasn't imagining it.  lol

Re: XBOX 360 won't save games

Hey indymom,

While it’s possible that system updates, demos and game settings files may be taking up a significant portion of your console’s storage space, I doubt that this is the cause of the problem you’re experiencing.  It’s my understanding that the contents of your console’s on-board memory should always be visible and accessible – even if there’s a hard drive installed – so you may want to consider returning or exchanging the unit if you’re unable to view this information.

To arrange an exchange, simply give our website support team a call at 1-888-BEST-BUY (1-888-237-8289).  Alternatively, you can return the console by bringing it to the customer service desk at your local Best Buy® store along with a copy of your order confirmation e-mail.

I hope this helps.

Re: XBOX 360 won't save games

Dear indymom,

I was just browsing the BBY forums and saw your post and felt compelled to register and give a reply! This could be the problem:

There are 3 separate models of the original Xbox 360 Arcade (not the newer slim 4GB black Arcade): 1) 256MB Memory Unit Model, 2) 256MB Built-In Memory, and 3) 512MB Built-In Memory.

The first unit doesn't have any internal storage and relies on an external memory stick. The other two units have very little storage space because the Xbox 360 dashboard update occupies most of it. Unless the employees checked the SKU numbers of the refurbished console, there is no way to tell whether or not the unit has internal memory, they might just have assumed it was a newer console and packaged it as such.

Best to exchange the unit as the console absolutely should list internal storage when you check system settings.
