What Good is the Geek Squad? GS almost made me drop Best Buy!

Since 2004, my wife and I have have frequented a single location Best Buy in Murray, Utah, for everything we've needed in electronics for our house or gifts. So, for 8 years we've purchased 3-flat panel Sony HD TV's, I bought a $1,000 Canon camera and a $500 2nd lens recently, four complete desktop computer workstations over the years, 3 graphic card upgrades, 2 sound card upgrades, a power supply, 2 vacuum cleaners(!) and probably 5 or 6 Ipods of various models and functions.

So, a week ago, I walked in with what we suspected was a blown-up graphics card that we had purchased at that store, but there was no warranty. I asked the Geek desk dude if he could 'test' the card to see if it was blown so I could walk over to the aisle and buy another one. I had a new 450 watt power supply off their shelves under my arm when I askled for help with a product (graphics card) I had purchased at BB.

A rather uninterested man looked at the old card and said,"Well, I could test it, but I would have to charge you $40." When I asked him why he would charge a good customer like me $40 if I promised to buy a new one right there on the spot, he said because he would have to "take apart a computer (open the case) and r-e-m-o-v-e the old graphics card and put mine in and then "put the computer back together" (close the case) and then, in his words, "reformat the computer to run your card." I said I just needed to see if the card was dead and this idiot went back to his internal script about charging me $40. So, it wasn't that he couldn't do it in 5 minutes, it was that he was going to charge me $40 come h*ll or high water.

Then things got even worse: I asked if there was any other way for us to find out if the card we had purchased right there was any good before wasting any more time and he said, with a straight face, that I could go across the street to PC Laptops store, a competitor, and he was sure they had a gizmo to test my card. I looked in disbelief at him and asked,"Should I buy a graphics card from them if this one's bad?" He said, without skipping a beat, that it was my choice. I said in increasing disbelief, "Should I buy this power supply under my arm from them, as well?"

And he actually shrugged his shoulders and said to me and my son,"Well, that's up to you, sir." I reported him to the store manager about three days later when I went in to buy another desktop. The manager said that there was nothing he could do and agreed that the Geek was way off base and that he was "going to talk to him," not about charging me $40, but for sending me out the door on $250-$300 worth of BB business.

Why do they even have the Geeks? The online rep is awful, their customer service skills are non-existent and I can attest that the biggest frustrations and disappointments I've had over the years (some of the biggest laughs that weren't funny) have been at the hands of the Geek Squad , a seemingly independent operation within Best Buy stores that doesn't seem to have an ounce of accountability, no matter how badly they screw something up.

So you're saying that even though it's a service they charge $40 bucks for it's easy so they should just do it for you for free? I get that you don't think it's very labor intensive and is quick but even if you feel it's overpriced that doesn't mean that the Geek Squad guy can just adjust the price for you right there. It's not up to him whether or not to charge you the $40 bucks, it's set by corporate. At least he gave you another option to get your card tested.

Re: What Good is the Geek Squad? GS almost made me drop Best Buy!

No, what I'm saying is it's completely inappropriate and anti-BB to send a loyal customer of that location out the door to shop at a competitor's place where he used to work over a $40 fee. That's how he knew the competition had a tester. And that's the part that rankled the GM. It was the GM who explained that because it's the sacred Geek Squad, there's nothing he could do about the $40, either.

I've been loyal to T-Mobile, having been a customer since they were Voicestream in 1996. When I call customer service, they first acknowledge my longevity with a "Wow! You've been with us a long time and we really appreciate that, Mr. Lines! How can we help you today?" And they almost never charge me for telephone upgrades and options that might be as much as $300-$400 to anyone without that history. Direct TV, same thing, been there for 8 1/2 years and they give us services and upgrades that others pay for because they haven't been loyal, long term customers like my household has been.

This is a case where I walked in with a product I bought there and didn't ask for or expect anything other than a confirmation that it was cooked so I could walk over to Aisle 10 and buy another one. I had the new power supply under my arm the whole time. Think Autozone, Andy, where they will test your car's various components and pull computer codes free of charge because they WANT you to buy replacement parts. It's why they exist, to sell you stuff. That reputation has permeated American consumer knowledge until everyone knows you can get free testing done at AutoZone and probably be able to buy the parts you need right there. It's 'business model.'

If this guy's refusal to do a quick mortality check on a product I bought there is because of 'corporate,' then BB is going out of business. I can buy everything BB sells online with the same general lack of knowledge that BB/Geek Squaders have only when I return something, I won't have to deal with the arrogance and generally unhelpful attitude that he displayed that day.

At least the GM had the good sense to just shake his head and apologize.

Re: What Good is the Geek Squad? GS almost made me drop Best Buy!

Hello BillLines,

From your post, it does sound like you have been a very loyal customer to our stores over the past several years. I am sorry to see that your recent experience at our Murray store had caused you to go to a competitor to get the service and items that you needed.

The Geek Squad is actually a part of Best Buy that provides services on the products that we carry and even on items that were not purchased from us. The Agents should be providing the same good customer service that any of our employees are expected to provide, and it was disappointing to see that did not happen in your recent visit. I am confident that the general manager you spoke with regarding this will have addressed the way the Agent handled this.

The services that our Geek Squad provides do have charges associated however, as there is labor involved. I apologize if the quoted $40 fee was not acceptable to you, but this is what is charged for the service that was being provided. Only the management at the store could provide an exception to this.

I do appreciate you sharing your feedback of the experiences you’ve had with other customer service, including the example of AutoZone. I will be certain to forward on this feedback to our internal business teams for future consideration regarding the services we provide and the costs for them. If you do have any additional questions or concerns regarding this, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely

Re: What Good is the Geek Squad? GS almost made me drop Best Buy!

We're not getting anywhere. You say,"Only the management at the store could provide an exception to this."($40 charge) and yet the GM I spoke with days later said his hands were tied because it was (drumroll) The Geek Squad! So, I have at least two totally different stories to contend with now. Or not.

Here's the deal and then I'm all done with BB:

The guy was standing around looking bored. You are so worried about that all-important labor charge that he would have racked up confirming my dead graphics card.

What about the salary he was racking up just standing there killing time and p*ssing off loyal customers? What's the opportunity cost of thoughtlessly sending a loyal household to a competitor over $40? As he stood there, killing time and salary, the Geek could have tested my card and sold me a new one and the power supply for it. Some of you may not realize that you cannot just trade-out your graphics card without bumping up your power supply to conform to the card's power requirements. End of story. We would ahev walked out happy with BB, had a new card and power supply and honestly, a new opinion of a bad idea that's killing your business, The Geek Squad.

Take that $40 and put it off to the side for a moment while I tell you how freshman MBA's and their spreadsheet mentality destroyed this country once they graduated and started taking corporate positions in companies like Best Buy. All they know is a bottom line and haven't the faintest clue about old school customer service and relationship selling and building loyalty. They see life as 'X" goes in, "Y" comes out and "Z" is the profit margin. They are like the Geek who killed my loyalty to BB, they just do not care whether you walk out of the store totally p*ssed or not.

And finally, my experience didn't 'cause me to go to a competitor...' A big, disinterested Latino Geek named Hector told me to go there, Melissa. I gave him 3 chances to help me and he was "helpless."

Good luck, Melissa, thanks for the response.

Bill

Re: What Good is the Geek Squad? GS almost made me drop Best Buy!

Why is Bill Lines more special then every other client that brings something into the store to be diagnosed and is charged?

It is a service that costs money. Geek Squad is not a free tech support service. End of discussion.

Re: What Good is the Geek Squad? GS almost made me drop Best Buy!

and by the way, the race of the agent in the store is irrelevent. I am sure if you asked to speak to a manager and he flagged a manager over and said "Mr. Manager, this big (insert whatever ethnicity you are) guy wants to speak with you", you would be screaming your lungs out. Your comment regarding the race of the employee offends me.
