I purchased an SATA Western Digital Hard drive (Green, 2Tb), 2-3 days ago. The box was "factory sealed", however, when I opened the box, the hard drive was corroded, had mold growing on it and several of the metal components were rusted. I returned the hard drive immediately and the store swaped it out for another identical drive. However, when I opened the second hard drive, it was no an SATA drive, it was an IDE interface drive. Again, this box was also "factory sealed". I have not taken this hard drive back, but am planning on doing so when I get a chance.
What is the deal? Is this Western Digitals fault? Or is this Best Buy repackaging used equipment and selling it as new? Have you heard of this happening with other Western Digital products/hard drives at other stores?

I have seen the wrong interface in the wrong box before. When those drives are mass produced, it is possible. I would exchange it, open it in the store and inspect it before you leave.

I have been working with computers for 20+ years and have never seen mold on a hard drive. I would have loved to see a picture of that.
