Snow Leopard in Macs starting September?

[ Edited ]

Hey, i have a question concerning macbook pro purchases after August 30th. Supposedly, starting September all macs and macbooks are supposed to come with Snow Leopard pre-installed or a copy is packed in.

However, upon picking up a macbook pro yesterday, the new OS was no where to be found. Are Best Buy retail stores doing anything to address the problem for people who bought a Mac after August 30th, who do not have Snow Leopard? Because I am hoping not having to spend another 30 dollars on something that should have came with the product.

The unit should have come with a copy at purchase. I would contact the store and inquire.

Re: Snow Leopard in Macs starting September?

I called in the morning and was told to bring the reciept in and they would send me off with a copy of Snow Leopard, so after work I went over to the store. The person at customer service initially denied me Snow Leopard and instructed me to purchase the DVD at full price. Then there was the exchange that went on for another minute or so. I was not too happy, and I was heading for the exit when he said there was nothing he could do. He was not too friendly either and his explanations had a condecending tone to it.  How about trying to help your customers next time instead of assuming they're just in to trouble you? I have better things to do than spending over one and half grand to be a troublemaker.

All Macs and Macbooks are to come with Snow Leopards pre-installed or with the DVD packed in after August 30th. Based on principles alone, wouldn't I be eligible for the missing DVD? What's outrageous was that he suggested that I return the Macbook Pro, suffer the 15% restocking fee, and wait until the next batch of Macbook Pros to reach the store with Snow Leopard pre-installed. No way was I going to do that. I was utterly in state of shock and also perplexed at the same time. I was starting to feel that there wasn't anything I could say that would change anything. I started heading for the exit.

After stepping out the store briefly, I decided to come back in again, this time ready to confront with him about the fact that I had called in the morning and they had told me information that led me to drive out all the way to the store for nothing.  I was really angry that initally he was denying me about something that he was unsure of instead of consulting with perhaps his fellow associates. He then went to ask around to see if it was true if Mac buyers after August 30th would indeed recieve a copy of Snow Leopard... Lo and behold it was true! He then tried to play it off cool with me that he was in fact right all along and he would help me out.

Anyways, after about an hour (arguing for the copy and on the principle of leading me to make the 30  minute one way drive for nothing, waiting in the exchange/return line to recieve my copy), i finally walked out with Snow Leopard.

I'm really relieved that I had decided to muster up some courage to walk back in the store and fight for what I believed was right. Had I backed down, I would have returned home even more bitter and with no Snow Leopard.

Sorry, I really had to get that out of me. I got home around 7pm, and that just kind of ruined my night.

Re: Snow Leopard in Macs starting September?

Hi memoryguy,

The new Snow Leopard upgrade has been generating a lot of excitement among Mac users. I am sorry to hear that the store was sold out when you made your MacBook Pro purchase. I can understand your concern of getting this software included with your purchase.

As of 8/28, customers buying a new Mac and the Snow Leopard upgrade on the same transaction at one of our stores, would receive a $29.99 instant package discount, covering the cost of Snow Leopard. This was meant to provide our customers the upgrade, until new shipments of Macs are received with preinstalled or prepackaged Snow Leopard.

It was disappointing to read of the trouble you had after calling the store and being told they would get you the copy of Snow Leopard. While it should not have been so difficult to have this completed as promised, I am glad to hear that you ultimately were provided with your copy of Snow Leopard.  Thank you for sharing your experience.

Re: Snow Leopard in Macs starting September?

Hi Melissa, I too have had this problem. I bought the 15" 2.8ghz MacBook Pro last 9/9 and the Snow Leopard wasn´t installed on it when I first boot.

I am located in Brazil. A friend of mine brought the laptop to me, so that I can´t go to a BestBuy store.

What can I do in order to acquire the new version?

Thanks,
