Pay early and get charged late fees

So, I've been paying early each month and then I get a statement and realize that because I'm paying early I'm receiving late fees. I now owe a few hundred in late fees just because I paid early. Tried to take it up with Customer Service and they told me to fax in the information to them for a service fee dispute which was denied. It doesn't make sense and is robbery. They told me that because we paid before the billing cycle ended (early) and their system applied that payment to the previous bill we were charged late fees. No where on the bill does it say we cannot pay early. Obviously, I'm not content paying an extra few hundred dollars when I should not have to. Who can I talk to and how can I explain this in a way that will get the situation resolved appropriately?

Re: Pay early and get charged late fees

Hi there and welcome to our Community! Pease keep in mind that you "minimum monthly payment" requirement must be paid during the billing cycle to keep the account current. One of our Community Connectors may be able to assist with this. They should be getting in touch with you in the next couple of business days.

Re: Pay early and get charged late fees

Hi solarcoast,

It sounds like you are a very responsible person, and I’m sorry for the confusion surrounding your payments and billing cycles.  I am assuming you are posting about your bill from one your Best Buy® credit cards, and because our credit cards are funded by HSBC, I would not have direct control over your account.

I would like to look into this on your behalf.  I am sending you a private message, and to check your messages you should log into the forum and then click on the letter icon in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Thanks for posting,

Re: Pay early and get charged late fees

"but once again BEST BUY has figure out in a shaddy kind of way I guess
to punish a good customer"

"Because I had made two payments I figure I had taken care of this month bill also, but Best Buy claims I had made
my other payment to early and because of that I has been charge a late fee."

I am sorry Lucas, but it is not Best Buy trying to punish you or claiming anything, the credit cards are owned by HSBC an completely controlled by HSBC, not Best Buy.

Re: Pay early and get charged late fees

If payments made after the due date always only went to the next billing cycle, as you want them to, then how would a customer ever be able to make a late payment?  If a person is unable to make a late payment, then they would never be able to catch back up on a missed or late payment, and have a mark on their credit history for that.

When you received the next statement, it should have showed that both of your payments ($100 and $50) were applied to your previous statement.

Now, I can understand being upset if you got a statement that didn't show both payments on it, or if HSBC was claiming that you never paid that $50, but billing cycles are quite common to have with credit cards and loans.

I've mentioned this to other people on the boards before, and it bears repeating now:

-ALWAYS check your statement every month and verify that the purchases that show up are the purchases you made, and check to see if there are any fees that you don't remember signing up for.

-ALWAYS wait until you receive your statement in the mail or online before you pay it, to ensure that you are making proper payments within the billing cycle.

-ALWAYS check the expiration date on your financed purchases to avoid incurring finance charges.

-And ALWAYS call HSBC (or Chase, if you're a former C*City cardholder) if you ever see ANYTHING out of place or strange about your bill, to ask them questions, IMMEDIATELY!

Re: Pay early and get charged late fees

The exact same thing has happened to me. I keep paying early, and I keep getting charged late fees. Why is this the ONLY credit card I have problems with? I have incurred over $300.00 in alleged "late fees" that are not late fees! I used to love shopping at Best Buy--okay I still go in and look around and get great customer service but then I turn around and purchase the product at another store. The employees are great and knowledgeable, but the contempt shown to the credit card customers when we've been wronged is totally unacceptable. The fact that this forum even exists speaks volumes about the company Best Buy keeps. I need help!

Are there brownie points for paying early? Just seems silly to even do so.

+1

I NEVER pay a bill before it arrives, or before a new one is posted and available on an online bill pay.  I'll still pay it before the due date, because that's just smart to do, but paying bills before they even arrive, especially on something like a credit card, which has variable payment amounts every month, is just asking for problems.
