Not so geeky

I love BestBuy.  They have everything that I could imagine needing in terms of electronics and tech devices.  I have the basics - computer, ipod, camera, etc.  Nothing fancy.  I have had some serious trouble with an ipod I bought there over 5 years ago though.  Luckily it was under warranty.  Unluckily, it was sent back and forth to be fixed over and over and over again.  Half the time that I had it, it didn't even work.  They said that I had to send it in a certain number of times for it to be qualified as a lemon.  So back and forth it went.  I recently went to send it again but this time they would not take it because it had a slight dent in the back which it actually came back with after one of it's very many trips but it was so slight I didn't care as long as the thing worked.  Needless to say, I gave up on this ridiculous process that had been going on over 4 years and so I succumbed to buying a new ipod since it didn't seem as though I was going to receive anything from them even though mine was a total dud.  I bought a new classic 120 GB.  Very exciting.  Finally I think that I can listen to music on an ipod and it will be fantastic.  Yay.  I went to connect it to my Dell notebook and the device wouldn't read.  Then, it wouldn't just not read, it would all together shut down my computer when I would plug it in and an error message would come up.  I fiddled around trying this and that to get it to work but no luck so I went to the geeksquad assuming they would know of some simple thing that they could at the very least tell me what was wrong.  The person I talked to was not particulary friendly but after seeming very baffled by my problem he ran a diagnostic on the computer and I thought it was nice that he was taking to the time to do that.  After 20 minutes I came back and he told me that he couldn't figure out why the ipod wasn't reading but that my diagnostic showed that I had one virus and maybe this was the problem.  Then he told me that it would be best to have someone come to my house to fix the problem because it would be 200 dollars as opposed to 300 dollars if I left it in the store.  He told me it might just be better to invest in a new computer since mine is somewhat old anyways.  I left the store thinking I had a broken computer to compliment my now unusable brand new ipod.  I was resolved to at least try to figure out why the ipod wasn't syncing or showing up in Itunes before I dug into my pockets again.  I know nothing about computers at all but after following some fairly simple steps on the microsoft website I was able to get it up and running.  What a joke!  In truth, I have been saving up to get a macbook for awhile now because my Dell is getting old and I assume that before too long it will just be the smart decision to invest in something new.  After having such bad results with my first ipod which never worked, and then having been asked for at least 200 dollars to get my new ipod to work, I don't think that I can say I will be getting my equipment from BestBuy.  I just don't have the kind of money that it apparently takes to service the products that you buy from there that the technicians can't make suggustions about, fix, or replace.

Howdy mermcs,

After a lot of hemming and hawing, I finally bought my very first iPod last year.  I now understand why so many are such fans of these devices.  I also know now how frustrating it would be to go without it.  I’m sorry to hear about the experience you had with your original iPod.  It can’t have been easy to have even more frustration heaped on after purchasing a new iPod, something that should have been easy and fun.

Geek Squad® Agents do their best to diagnose our customers' technology and arrive at a proper recommendation for action.  The truth is that viruses are insidious and can damage components in a computer’s software that affect its operation.  Also, at least in my experience, when our customers are recommended to an expensive repair, the Agent may recommend replacing the computer since investing in increasingly obsolete equipment may not be in our customer’s best interest.  Oftentimes customers can invest a similar amount of money on an upgraded machine with new technology.

I am quite happy that you were able to resolve the issue through Microsoft’s website.  I visited there myself and found the solution you may have employed.  Based on my understanding, and because of the somewhat risky nature of the fix, it is likely that Geek Squad® would not recommend it as a course for our customers to pursue.  Even Microsoft stressed that the procedure could cause additional harm.

Thank you for writing, mermcs.
