I could understand being very unhappy if my service provider was Verizon and I received an AT&T iPad.
That said, I have trouble believing that Apple is cranking out that many defective iPads. One of the reasons there are so many of us "Apple loyalists" is that (a majority of the time) you get what you pay for. Apple is not known for rushing software or hardware to market before it's ready for prime time. I have Apple products ranging from an older iPod Video to a newer iPod Touch (not to mention the iMac I'm using to write this with) and have yet to encounter a single manufacturing defect.

I guess you did not hear about Australia or antennagate.

Your guess is correct, I hadn't heard about the confusion in Australia. I was only going by many years of using iTunes and iPods, as well as several recent purchases of newer Apple products. I also plan to get an iPhone soon (before Verizon starts charging a $30 upgrade fee) and my wife will be getting an iPad. I don't believe your links change the fact that personally (as I stated before) I have yet to encounter a single manufacturing defect in any Apple product.

Why don't you just have a family member return it......problem solved.
