Best Buy & Geek Squad Policies

I recently picked up my laptop from Best Buy that was serviced/repaired by Geek Squad. When I bought the computer, it came with the latest version of Mircosoft Office (It was installed by Best Buy). And since my hard drive was replaced, Microsoft Office was obviously not in the new one. Is there a way I could get my Microsoft Office program back? I don't have the service key and I was never given the Mircosoft Office box of some sort. Like I said, Best Buy installed it for me when I bought Microsoft Office as a package along with my computer.

Based on what you mentioned, it sounds like you purchased a Microsoft Office product key card for your computer instead of a full retail box version.  If this is the case, then you should have been provided a plastic or laminated card with your product key at the time of sale.  If you do not have this card, you will want to contact your local Microsoft product activation center for assistance or purchase a replacement.  As long as you registered the program suite, a Microsoft rep may be able to locate your product key.  Information how to contact a product activation center in your area can be found here:

MS Office is a complete rip-off and I do not recommend it to ANYONE.  Please please please, DO NOT buy MS Office whatever you do, and there is a very good reason.

You can get the same thing....FOR FREE from the OpenOffice Project at http://www.openoffice.org.  You get word processor, spreadsheet, database and presentation software among other things FOR FREE.   It can open all Microsoft Office formats as far as I know.

Please DO NOT waste your money on Macroshaft products.

Only issue...

  MS Office and OO file compatibility. If my professor sends me a fairly advanced spreadsheet created in Excel, it might not work properly in OO.

  Microsoft Office is $120 for a student version w/ the most common programs, and, in my opinion, that's worth not having to deal with the compatibility, since everyone and their mom uses MS Office, at least at my University.
