I think it's important for retailers to protect themselves and future customers.
Retailers may be trying to track people making returns to minimize scams.

I'd suggest going back to Home Depot and complaining to the manager. Make sure to tell them that you spend thousands eah year and you are the go-to person in your family for home repairs an you will make sure that none of your family or friends will ever shop there again. Then threaten them with a BBB complaint and talk about how your going to notify the attorney general in your state and your local news organizations. Make sure to somehow utilize the phrase "bait and switch" for old times sake.
