Then why did they use their software first to try and recover my data? Are you saying that by doing that, they could've actually caused more damage? Geek Squad's procedure was software > better (out of store) software > 3rd party clean room Or at least that is what I was told....
Because they don't know if there was a mechanical failure on the hard drive at first. This is not an exact science, and they attempt the cheaper/easier fix first. If that doesn't happen, then they have to go to more extensive options. If they had tried the other way first, I can just hear the whining that would happen......"Geek Squad didn't even try to see if it was a simple fix with their software, they just immediately wanted me to pay $1600. I'm going to the BBB.......etc."
As I said, Data Recovery is NOT an exact science. But some people think that it is and when things turn out not so good for them, they want to blame everybody, it's only natural.
