Are you saying that by doing that, they could've actually caused more damage? Because they don't know if there was a mechanical failure on the hard drive at first.  This is not an exact science, and they attempt the cheaper/easier fix first.  If that doesn't happen, then they have to go to more extensive options.  If they had tried the other way first, I can just hear the whining that would happen......"Geek Squad didn't even try to see if it was a simple fix with their software, they just immediately wanted me to pay $1600.  I'm going to the BBB.......etc."

As I said, Data Recovery is NOT an exact science.  But some people think that it is and when things turn out not so good for them, they want to blame everybody, it's only natural.

Re: Data Recovery at Geek Squad... ridiculous...

I just wits that they would've said something to the effect of "this has as much of a guarantee of working as the previous 2 did." But that wasn't the impression they left me with. I paid them because I was led to believe that these guys they were sending it to would hook it up. Lost invaluable and irreplaceable information is terrible. Lost information + 1500 bucks down the toilet is just salt in an already deep wound.

Re: Data Recovery at Geek Squad... ridiculous...

I was responding to the guy with the striped raid. If the work is being done in a clean room by professionals, they can check the drive to insure that they will not damage the drive further. However if the work is being done by a random person who clearly doesn't know enough about computers to have redundant backups of their data, blindly running some software recovery sw can cause more damage to an already failing hdd.

Re: Data Recovery at Geek Squad... ridiculous...

Just for the sake of ending my part in this discussion, Best Buy has remedied this problem through the help of the community connector. In so doing, my confidence in their store and services has been restored. Thank you all for your feedback over the past few days. On top of the difficulties of everyday life, this added stress has been difficult. If any of my posts were offensive, i spologize as that was never my intent. I just needed clarification. Today, Best Buy / Geek Squad took care of the problem and while I will never have my precious data back (valuable lesson learned), their solution (that will remain between us) was more than gracious in their effort to make amends. Thanks again BB/GS community, David
