What does a war hero do once the battle ends? In a perfect world he may settle down, take a wife, and have a child. Lost friends are remembered, and a new life is forged from the remnants of the old. Of course, Sera has never been a peaceful, idyllic place. Perhaps it was naïve to even hope to find peace. After all, if it were a perfect world, then war would be a concept unknown.
Nevertheless, Marcus Fenix tried to create a peaceful existence, and you have to give him credit for that. After the events of Gears of War 3 he and partner-in-war Anya settled down and had a son. They named him James Dominic (JD) after their fallen friend. Before JD was born Marcus may have joined the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) Militia and been fighting with fellow infantrymen, COGs, simply because it offered a way of life, and later got him out of prison. Maybe it was for the team, the people who had his back through the darkest days. I imagine Marcus was more pragmatic. He would fight or he would die. Until JD was born I doubt he really thought about the world he would leave in his wake. No surprise, then, that it is for his son that he takes up arms once more.
Let’s spin the dial ahead, and now we have JD a young man who has fallen into the pattern he saw in his parents. He joined the COG militia and meets his best friend Delmont (Del) Walker. Events transpire that lead to JD and Del going AWOL and set up the story for Gears of War 4. Like the memorable opening of Gears of War, you are rapidly thrown into action defending yourself from new and deadly adversaries.
As a gamer, you’ll recognize the iconic landscapes and ruins of Sera. You’ll be comfortable wearing the COG armor and brandishing a lancer rifle. You won’t find it odd to have a chainsaw in the place of a bayonet, flaying your enemies with the press of a button. But The Coalition has more in store for us than that. New weapons, new enemies, and a new threat loom overhead. The events of Gears of War 4 take place over a 24 hour period (think Jack Bauer meets the Predator), so you had better prepare for one LONG day.
A few notable new weapons have been highlighted in game previews, such as the buzzkill rifle, a gun that shoots buzz saw blades like they were flying discs. Just watch out for the rebound. Another is called a Drop Shot, a handy tool to have in your arsenal. Pulling the trigger will launch a mine to fly over the battlefield for as long as the trigger is held. When released, the mine will fall straight down to the ground before exploding. And although it is far less flashy than a rifle, you will find your combat knife an invaluable tool as you make your way across the battlefield. While crouching behind shelter you’ll find it useful for grabbing enemies hiding on the other side.
Play a great single player game or grab a friend for some classic split-screen co-op gaming action and experience Gears of War 4. If multi-player battles are more your speed, compete online at 60fps over dedicated servers. I’ll see you in Sera.
