I am thinking of getting Windows 7 for my desk top that has Vista. Is this a good idea? I thought I also heard that 7 runs on XP??? Is that right, and if so would I have t buy windows xp as well? Thanks for any help.

Re: Windows 7???

I would go here and download the application and run it http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx. It will tell you how capable your system is of running Windows 7 and what you may have compatibilty issues with. As far as hearing Windows 7 runs on XP I think you are talking about Windows XP Mode which is available in Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, and Windows 7 Ultimate editions. Windows XP mode allows you to run a fully licensed copy of Windows XP from within Windows 7 using what is called a Virtual Machine. There is no cost for XP Mode and no license to buy. You will be able to get it as a free download from Microsoft so long as you have one of the 3 editions qualifying editions i listed above.

Re: Windows 7???

Windows XP mode is only available in the Professional version of Windows 7 from what I read online, unless someone else can kindly point me to the right place.

And 7 Ultimate. Also needs chip level virtualization which not all CPU's have.

Re: Windows 7???

as I said in my post above XP Mode is availabe in Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. The only editions of 7 that does not get XP mode is Starter and Home Premium.

Still about 3 to many in my opinion. There is still no need to dilute the market with 5 different editions but still better then the count they had with Vista. But still to many.
