Phone/apps paralyzed & need help

Hello, I need to get a phone. I haven't had a cell phone since flip phones were the popular thing. I am paralyzed from the shoulders down and at that point where I pretty much need a phone for so many reasons and it sucks but I have to. I know nothing, LOL! I want to be able to control everything on the phone using my voice! I don't like the idea of only being able to do the very limited amount of things that I don't care about that much. Talking, texting, browsing Internet, etc. I don't know which phone would be best and don't know about apps. I'm guessing there are apps out there that help to control your phone, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Re: Phone/apps paralyzed & need help

Hello Munkypoop,

Getting back into using phones after not having one since flip phones can be overwhelming! While both Apple and Android phones offer "personal assistants" that receive voice commands and there area a great deal of third party apps for voice commands, I'm regrettably not aware of any devices or third party apps that have been officially released that would allow for total voice control over a device. I'm truly sorry for any disappointment this news may cause you. If you have any other questions I may assist with, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer.

Re: Phone/apps paralyzed & need help

Yeah, last time I had a phone was spring of 2007. That's when I became paralyzed. That was the year Apple announced their iPhone but wasn't available until way after my accident. I don't know if it helps but, I have the Google home personal assistant thing??

I was hoping there would be apps to help control your phone more. How is the Google pixel or other phones with their built in voice recognition stuff?

Hello Munkypoop -

To my knowledge the Google Pixel's Google Assistant may have more abilities with combined with Google Home, but would still not provide total control of your phone.

Can Alexa work on a Google phone the way they want it to?

Hello BBBob -

This is a fantastic question! While Alexa may expand the abilities, it wouldn't provide complete control of the phone as needed/desired.

Re: Phone/apps paralyzed & need help

So if I got the Google pixel phone... I can use more with my Google home thing but I could do more on the phone if I purchase an Alexa, maybe the echo is enough??

Re: Phone/apps paralyzed & need help

Hi Munkypoop -

The Google Home would work with a Google Pixel phone. However, I would like to clarify that Alexa is the automated voice of Amazon's home automation system - the Echo and Echo Dot. You may pair your phone to add control around your home. Neither would provide the total control you seem to be looking for.

Re: Phone/apps paralyzed & need help

I'd recommend an iPhone. Apple has LOTS of accessibility features available and many 3rd-party assistance devices can pair with an iPhone as well to work even more. Get in touch with Apple's sales team or their Accessibility department directly (877-204-3930) to see if something is available that may work for you.
